CHAPTER 07

Jack prepared himself as the rover slowed and finally came to a halt twenty meters from the forward outpost.

Even from this distance he could see that it had clearly been abandoned for some time. Everything went silent as Lyra killed the engine. The soundproofing inside the vehicle was good enough that they didn’t even hear the faintest trace of the gusts of winds that occasionally shook the vehicle outside.

“Wait here,” Jack said as he undid his seatbelt.

“We’ll defer to your judgment, let us know when it’s safe. The radio is already keyed to our own secure channel,” Maureen replied.

Jack nodded and looked around, out of all the windows, before opening his door. He didn’t see anything moving around out there, just dust in the wind and a few little twists of miniature dirt whirlwinds here and there. He closed the door firmly and checked over his submachine gun, ensured it was ready for a firefight, and took the safety off.

Then he activated his radio. “Comms check.”

“I hear you,” Maureen said.

“Same,” Lyra said.

“I’m going forward.”

He mentally chastised himself as he began walking away from the rover, SMG in hand. A goddamned radio check was something he should have done before they had even gotten in the rover back at base. It spoke to the detrimental effects of not constantly living in strain and stress every day. On the one hand: that was awful. On the other hand: it kept you sharp. Jack knew that he was going to have to train a bit more seriously. He had the hard work part down still, but the awareness? He was certainly more aware of his environment than the average civilian, but he was less than he should be. Situational awareness wasn’t just looking around and having quick reflexes, it was also planning for whatever environment you were going into.

Before you went into it.

Jack let himself shift into that certain specific focus he’d discovered, developed, and honed over the past four years. There wasn’t much on this side of the structure, just a lot of big, open dirt fields. But behind it he could see the tops of those cacti-trees peeking over the roof, and to the right and back a bit was a large rise in the land.

Then there was the structure itself.

It was all one building, a simple, roughly square shaped prefabricated building. Most of the windows were broken out. He’d seen similar structures before, lived in a few, actually. Good chance there was a plus-symbol of hallways cutting the interior into four quadrants, each quadrant holding some crucial part of the bare-minimum outpost. There didn’t appear to be any movement behind those windows, but someone could be hiding.

The rover was certainly noticeable enough from a distance.

But he didn’t see any obvious telltales of someone having been around the area recently. No disturbances in the dirt, no bootprints, no extra gear around.

“I don’t see anything so far,” he reported. “Moving around back.”

“Understood,” Maureen replied.

He was glad she seemed to grasp the basics of radio chatter.
